‘I don’t believe it!’ muttered Magenta as the three of them bore down. ‘It’s Wendy.’

‘Fancy seeing you, Madge!’ cried the little beaming one. ‘You never said you was coming here today!’

‘I don’t want to be here,’ snapped Magenta. ‘I’m here because you forgot to put in the chilly-chilli oil yesterday.’

‘Did I? Sorry about that. I just bumped into Maureen and Shirley, look!’

‘Hello, Magenta,’ sighed Maureen, the mournful one.

‘I knew it!’ said Shirley, the one holding the teapot. ‘Knew she’d be here today. Saw it in the tea leaves. You will meet an old friend, they said.’

‘Ain’t this lovely?’ went on Wendy. ‘All here together at the same time!’ She beamed at Elsie. ‘Is this her? The girl you was telling me about yesterday? The promising one you’re training up?’

Magenta gave a sigh. ‘Elsie, meet Wendy the Wise Woman of Clackham Common. And Maureen the Hag of Heaving Heath. And Madame Shirley, Fortune Teller to the Stars.’

‘Tea leaves a speciality,’ added Madame Shirley, nodding at the teapot. ‘Cross my palm with gold and all will be revealed.’

‘I thought it was silver,’ said Maureen.

‘I’ve put my fees up,’ said Shirley. ‘Inflation.’

‘I don’t charge for my wisdom,’ Wendy informed them. ‘People just give me stuff. I make more that way because they don’t want to appear tight. Pleased to meet you, Elsie, dear.’

‘How do you do?’ said Elsie politely.

Training me up? she thought. Promising? She thinks I’m promising.

Magenta didn’t hand out praise easily. Elsie couldn’t help feeling pleased.
